Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon? Or who is someone they miss the most?
Though Meryl cares deeply for Vash and likely Wolfwood as well, her relationship with Roberto De Niro is the one that had the most profound impact on her. Throughout canon, Roberto was insistent that she would either get herself (or both of them) killed. This more or less happened, with Roberto arguably taking a bullet (er, wellโฆ nail) for Meryl and dying in her stead. As a result, she inherits her first derringer pistol, something that is a trademark for her in other/later canons, from Roberto after he passes.
She continues to visit his memorial, bringing him a pack of cigarettes on a seemingly regular basis.
2. What are they most afraid of?
Losing the people she cares about. She was devastated at the loss of Roberto. During his final moments, she refused to accept the gun he offered (and thus likely, his death). Almost immediately after, she threw herself into danger repeatedly in order to save Vash, who she also believed she would lose as his memories were being destroyed.
3. What is their weakness? Emotionally, mentally and physically?
Physically: Meryl is thrown into a world that is beyond her scope, in that the people she travels with are a Plant and a genetically engineered superhuman. Her weakness is that sheโs an entirely average human, and a rather small one at that. On several occasions, she has to be rescued by other people because she lacks the big gun (Wolfwood) or the cool Plant abilities (Vash) that the people around her have.
Mentally: Meryl can be standoffish and holier than thou. She believes that her path and her choices are the correct ones and pushes others to fall in line with her. Her single-minded drive pushes her into conflict with her senior, Roberto, on frequent occasions. And she often butts heads with Wolfwoodโs lackadaisical nature and Vashโs chaos. Though her adventures with Vash (and presumably the two years that followed) have forced Meryl to grapple with this outlook โ such as being schooled on the necessity of doing arguably morally questionable things to survive back in Jeneora Rock โ she still maintains a bit of arrogance in her demeanor.
Emotionally: Meryl blames herself for the loss of Roberto. If not for her pushing him in the above cases, he wouldnโt have been with her when Elendira attacked them, leading to his death. Meryl outright says this, leading to Roberto to chide her.
4. What would make them happiest?
Making a mark on the world. Her entire goal for following Vash is to discover his story. She wants to make a difference by telling the truth about him, whether it be her initial belief that the bounty Vash held was for the wrong man, or discovering what he was hiding in later episodes. The only problem at this point is that she is no longer sure what that mark is.
5. Whatโs their type for a lover?
Meryl is probably a romantic. She would want someone who could quite literally sweep her off her feet. They would need to be bigger than her, to make up for the fact that she canโt protect them as readily. But they also need to be good with their words and flatter her, too!
