Oh yeah?? [ A brief clearing of the throat, and he tries again, less obviously enthusiastic this time. ]

I mean, oh. Yes. That would make sense, givin' that yer all journalistical and such.

[ A journalist is someone who writes in a journal, right? So it would make sense that Meryl would want one. ]

Yeah. Yeah that's... pretty much exactly it!

[ Aaaaand then he hangs up. Guess that conversation's over.

And then, a few days later, an oddly-shaped package haphazardly stuffed into a gift bag with some crumpled up tissue paper shows up outside Meryl's castle with a note in what looks like a child's handwriting reading: FOR MERREL, FRUM GROG. Inside the bag is some stationery supplies that Grog purchased at one of the shops in town, including a fuzzy journal for all her journalist-ing, and several clicky pens with funny-looking heads on top, that all write in colorful glitter ink. There's a little note card included (which Grog asked someone else to help him write) advising that all the supplies came highly recommended by the wizard who co-owns the shop, and that if Meryl ever needs more, she should go there and ask for Jimothy.

(He may have gotten Elias and his kookaburra familiar Jimothy confused.) ]

[This is... the most ostentatious assortment of pens, ink, and paper she's ever seen in her life. Never would she be caught dead purchasing something like this of her own volition. She could only imagine the humiliation that would have come with using these around her former colleagues.

... but they're really cute, the most she looks at them. And even if they weren't, the fact that someone had gone out of their way to get them for her, based off of her own vague and barely described interests? She's touched to say the least.

Which is why they all end up front and center in the middle of her desk. Meryl even spends the night transcribing some of the notes from her current notebook into the new one. And once all is said and done, she makes sure to send a voice message over to Grog.]

You have really good taste, you know that? Thanks a lot for the gifts.

[ Grog's voice is excited, like a puppy who's been told he's being a very good boy. ]

They oughta be good for writin', I tested the inks an' everything.

I do! They've already worked well so far. I've done a bunch of writing and everything!

[She sends over a quick picture of a very full page. There's a sketch of what looks to be a building layout, as well as some notes here and there.]

[ Cue Grog squinting at the tiny screen. ]

Ooh! What building is that?

Oh! It's a business I'm thinking about opening here soon — a publishing company. I'm mostly just thinking about a newsletter for now. Little updates for people, maybe stories about some of our comrades here? We'll see, though.

Publishing?

[ He knows what a "pub" is. But he's pretty sure the town's already got one of those, and he doesn't see what it has to do with stories. Apart from telling them over a few rounds of ale. ]

What's a newsletter?

[Unfortunately, this journalist doesn't bring alcohol into her work. But maybe if Roberto ever shows up, he'll put the Pub in publishing?]

It's when you print something out. A book or something.
And a Newsletter is usually a piece of paper, maybe a two or three. It's an update on major events. It helps people keep in touch and maybe learn things about other people.
Does that make sense?

So, it's like a real short book? That sounds like my kinda readin'! Are there pictures, too?

There can be! I'm trying to figure out how to get my hands on a camera. Granted, the photos aren't the focus, but they're a nice visual element to tie the story goether, you know.

Books're always better with pictures! When ya look at a picture, ya know exactly what yer lookin' at. With words, ya gotta sound 'em out and then use yer brain to know what it's talkin' about.

For me, that's part of the fun. But I imagine if that's not your background, it would be a bit more difficult. Just for you, I'll do my best to include a few pieces of artwork. If I can't find a camera, I'll just... figure out how to draw it all!

[Briefly, she considers ending the voice call in entirely, or pretending that it's begun to cut out. That way he can't pick up on how she stumbles and stammers.]

Not all that often. I can be a bit... stubborn, sometimes. I'm sure you picked up on that too.

Stubborn ain't a bad thing! I've won loads o' fights just by bein' stubborn.

[And a few days later, a message from Meryl comes through!]

Hi, Grog! You needed information about Galo Thymos right? I've got some stuff for you! He likes Pizza, but... Um? Margherita Pizza I guess? And he likes that spicy! He's a big fan of cake it looks like, and prefers to drink, er... Not? Spicy? Water. Weird.

Also he said he'd like more clothes, but to be mindful of the fact that he has to wear a burn sleeve? So basically things with no sleeves at all. That should be easy for you, right?

[Oops. Busy as she is, she forgot the issues of sending a message versus audio calls. She quickly corrects that with an audio message.]

It sounds like a good plan, Grog. Do you need me to repeat any of it, just in case?

[ Oh, thank the gods... Writing is still so hard. Just talking is much easier. ]

No, if I forget, I can make my Oracle lady read it to me.

[ Text to speech is his friend... Though he may be under the impression that there's a magic lady who lives inside his Oracle who is reading his texts to him. ]
